Bent (2025)
This project features a small puppet embedded with rotary encoders that users can pick up, bend, and manipulate. Its movements drive a distorted, expressive p5.js sketch inspired by Francis Bacon’s contorted figures. By translating physical gestures into shifting digital forms, the piece explores embodiment, distortion, and how bodies are reshaped through interaction and technological interpretation.
Technically, the project uses an Arduino to read joint angles from multiple rotary encoders embedded in the puppet’s limbs. The Arduino streams this sensor data to a computer via serial communication. A p5.js sketch receives the incoming values, maps them to visual parameters, and generates a responsive, abstracted digital figure that shifts in real time as the puppet is physically manipulated.
